HeadStrong, BEST, Seattle Childrens, Pacific Northwest Neurological Society, TACID, and the Vet Corps are co-hosting three days of trainings with Tim. Each day will focus on a different group to build specific insight and skills. To accommodate schedules, all sessions will be open to all attendees.

Vet Corps, Military, and Families: Monday, May 7th

Persons Affected by TBI, Caregivers, Support Groups: Tuesday, May 8th

Seattle Children’s Rehabilitation Services, in partnership with HeadStrong and Brain Injury Association of Washington, is please to begin a series of support groups geared towards children and youth who have sustained a brain injury and their families.

Please join us for our first group hosted at Seattle Children’s:

When: April 28th, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

For parents and caregivers: Connect and share information, successes, challenges with other parents.

For children and adolescents: Meet other young people who are recovering from TBI. We’ll have great recreational activities for ages 5-21. Siblings are welcomed.

Please RSVP as space is limited. Parking is available in the Whale parking lot and is free. Childcare will be available for children under 5 years of age. Please specify the number of children, ages, and if you need childcare when you RSVP.

University of Puget Sound student, Aimee Faye, is conducting a research study on the effectiveness of caregiver training and education after a family member’s TBI. The study seeks to identify what was helpful, what needs improvement, and what education and training is still needed.

Aimee will conduct two interviews with each caregiver. By sharing your experience, you will help improve education, training, and support for other families after TBI.

Disability Rights Washington (DRW) is investigating the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) eligibility criteria for the category of “other conditions.”  Currently, TBI is a “rejected” condition for eligibility purposes.  DRW believe that people who have had a head injury before the age of 18 should be able to be considered for DDD services based on their functional needs.  They base this on their understanding of Medicaid and American’s with Disabilities Act law.

DRW wants to talk with families and individuals with TBI who have been denied DDD services under the “other conditions” category.
